Project Overview
The MARAMURES ARTISTS' HOUSE will be an artistic hotspot in north-west Romania on the border with Ukraine. In a historically valuable traditional wooden house, local and international artists from various artistic disciplines such as painters, musicians, writers and photographers will have the opportunity to live and work in the unique cultural landscape of Maramures for a period of their choice.

Stage 1:

By the time we reach this stage, the house will have been erected at its new destination in the Weintal, covered with a beautiful new wooden shingle roof and connected to electricity and water.

When we reach this stage, the house will have two rooms downstairs, a kitchen and a bathroom. The roof will also be extended, meaning that the artist's house will have a total of four rooms.

If we also reach this amount, we will plant traditional fruit trees and shrubs for a garden around the Maramures wooden house and create raised beds for herbs.
The traditional MaramureÅŸ house was found, bought from the previous owner and transported to Valea Vinului (Wine Valley). We have been living in this valley since 2002 and own a wonderful piece of land (4000 square metres) on which we would like to rebuild the wooden house true to the original. In this house, national and international artists will be able to meet to receive and give impulses for their creative work. We are both artists ourselves: My wife is involved in reverse glass painting and I have built up the MaramureÅŸ film archive and made over 50 documentary films. I also draw and paint, write novels and take photographs.
Artists need a wide range of inspiration and stimulation, but also peace and concentration. The MaramureÅŸ Artists' House in Romania offers ideal conditions for this project, as it is located in the centre of one of the last self-contained cultural landscapes in Europe. The special aesthetics of the house, the scenic setting and, last but not least, the inspiring inhabitants allow everything to come together in one place. I am writing this from my own experience, as I have felt artistically supported here for over 20 years. The photographs and texts presented in the video "In the sign of the mountains" were created over 20 years and published in the illustrated book "Maramuresch. 101 photos/stories from the Romanian Carpathian Mountains" and are available as a goodie.
Take your time and look at MaramureÅŸ through my eyes and words in the film "Uncomfortable Beauties", which is also a film about a book. The almost classic search for the meaning of life is focussed here on a cultural landscape that has remained largely unknown in Europe: the Maramures. The experiences that can be recounted from there should bring this seemingly archaic habitat to the attention of artists who have become curious about countries like Romania. What creative person would not like to have a similar experience and live and work in this area of tension for a time of their own choosing? We are happy to help and provide many suggestions.

Documentary filmmaker
Born in Berlin in 1963, I worked for ten years as a set designer in Germany and Romania. Since 2002 I have been living in this wonderful valley with Florentina, my wife, who comes from the wine valley in MaramureÅŸ/Romania. Here, in MaramureÅŸ, I have been working for over 20 years as a documentary filmmaker, photographer, painter and writer in the centre of an ethnologically exciting cultural area. Through my award-winning documentary films, I have been able to draw the attention of many artists to this unique region. With the acquisition of the wooden house from a neighbouring village and its new location in our vicinity, I would like to save and revive a historically valuable building on the one hand, and bring creative people together on the other, in order to enable artistic impulses in a living space that is conducive to this.
