Enable an excellent pupil who came to KKEV Cambodia’s children’s village as a half-orphan at the age of 9 to go to university. Maneth is a hardworking 18year old from an underprivileged background who tutors children in Khmer and maths. With a degree he will be able to live an independent life and break the cycle of poverty. His desire is to study English, work in tourism and teach Cambodian culture and history.
What does EUC do?
'Empowering Underprivileged Children' (EUC) is a Swiss non-profit association with a focus on supporting 'KKEV Cambodia' (Children's Aid Cambodia) through various fundraising activities.
What does KKEV Cambodia do?
'KKEV Cambodia' has been running a children's village in Phnom Penh for up to 100 children between 2 and 20 years old for almost 20 years with the help of a competent and experienced local staff team. Children from neglected backgrounds, orphans, half-orphans, without caring family structures live there permanently in a safe and caring home until they have completed public school and can stand on their own two feet. In addition, KKEV Cambodia runs a 'Street Children's Program' for up to 120 children who receive school support and a daily meal. All of the children attend public school, but due to their difficult social background, they need targeted school support so that they can graduate from school, which is so important for their future, and complete an apprenticeship or even a university degree in the future. At the end of their time with KKEV Cambodia, the young adults stand on their own two feet - financially and emotionally.
How are the Children's Village and the Street Children's Program of KKEV Cambodia financed?
The budget of KKEV Cambodia for the maintenance of the Children's Village and the Street Children's Program is raised each year from membership fees, donations, sponsorships and grants (such as from the DC Small Projects Fund of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development) as well as fundraising activities of EUC.
How are very good and high-achieving children who want to study supported?
So far, it has not been possible to fund scholarships for university studies. KKEV Cambodia's budget covers the children's time in school with the corresponding academic support and, in addition, the teaching of manual, practical skills within the framework of various apprenticeship programs (the up to 2-year vocational apprenticeships with e.g. Don Bosco or the Cambodia-Thai Skills Development Institute are subject to a fee). The cost of tuition fees, study materials and minimum living expenses for university studies of children who have very good school performance, the skills and the will to study cannot be covered by the budget so far and need separate funding.
Our project
With the help of Crowdify, we would like to support the first student of KKEV to study at university: Pav Maneth is an excellent and hardworking student who came to KKEV Cambodia Children's Village at the age of 9 as a half-orphan. Maneth has come from very poor and underprivileged background to become a responsible young man. He teaches Khmer and math to younger children in the children's village. He helps grow vegetables and raises chickens, which allows him to save a little money for his studies. Raising CHF 12.000 USD for a university education on his own is nearly impossible, it represents about 80 times the average monthly wage of a common laborer.
With your donation, Maneth can study at the university. He will receive a solid education and will be able to find a good job that will allow him to live independently. For the Children's Village, a university scholarship would be an important signal and a great motivation for the children to make an effort. As an association, we enjoy tax deductibility and can acknowledge your donations accordingly.
With your help to finance Maneth's studies, the children learn that with good performance and diligence they can manage to break the poverty cycle.
My husband Stephan and I have five children aged 9-23 and after 17 years in Asia we now live again in Switzerland. Since 2010, we as a family have been supporting the activities of KKEV Cambodia with donations and fundraising. Our connection to KKEV comes through an uncle of my husband who founded KKEV Cambodia 20 years ago and has since retired due to age.
I have been a board member in the German association KKe.V. Aachen since 2021 and together with friends we founded the Swiss association 'Empowering Underprivileged Children (EUC)' in December 2022 to support KKEV Cambodia as well. Our goal to support children to develop from great poverty and socially very difficult backgrounds into a future with real opportunities motivates all of us in our work and in fundraising. We are happy to support Pav Maneth as the first student who is interested in university studies, works hard for it and managed to qualify. With his values and work ethic, Maneth is a role model for other children and inspires us and hopefully many others to make his studies possible via crowdfunding.
