Since 2009, I have seen quite a few faces of pain transformed, though for a moment, through a form of art.
Then I saw and heard other living stories... horrifying stories that seemed almost unbelievable: women being sold and then raped, their babies being birthed and then torn apart to have their organs harvested in the black market, little girls forced to have sex with up to 10 or 20 men... the horror goes on and on.
I could not be indifferent. I needed to play my part in helping those people re-write their stories and paint them with hope. Then I heard the story of Margeaux Gray and her testimony on how art therapy was the very reason of her survival, helping her to overcome her post-traumatic disorder after years of being trafficked, that inspired me and became the turning point on my decission to study art therapy.
Before, I wanted, dreamed even, about using art to help people overcome pain. Now, I am convinced that it is part of my mission in life.
There lies my motivation for getting a masters in expressive arts therapy. Though I do not hold a bachelor, I was accepted in part for having enough university level credits as well as my personal life experiences as an artist, mentor and leader but also because of my initiative, passion, competency, perseverance and commitment necessary to succeed in this program.
