Drive Goodeids Forward

Successful conservation plan in danger of getting stuck

Project Overview

Plan G Mexico has been working successfully since October 2023 to protect Mexican goodeid fishes. It is supported by many stakeholders who are currently investing in nine individual projects. However, basic costs are hardly taken into account, and as our two vehicles in use are already old, we need to renew or expand our fleet in good time in order to be able to manage all projects. The support will be used to purchase a truck to close this gap.

Funding goals

  1. Stage 1:

    20.000 EUR

    16% funded

This amount can be used as a down payment for a Toyota Hilux Double Cabin SR truck if the total amount is not reached.

  2. Finish Stage:

    32.000 EUR

    0% funded

This amount will be used for the purchase of a Toyota Hilux Double Cabin SR in Mexico. This will allow us to go on managing our projects.

Mexico's Goodeids are an extraordinary group of fish represented in about 40 species in the highlands of Mexico, and 90% of the species are threatened with extinction. But why are these fish outstanding? They do not lay eggs, but give birth to live young, and this in a unique way: For two months, the mother nourishes her offspring in the womb with nutrients and supplies its babies with oxygen, and this in a manner similar to humans. Therefore, one can rightly call Goodeids the most human-like of all fish. Thus, these jewels of the Aztecs, as we call them and which only exist in Mexico, are a marvel of creation...

One picture shows a Rainbow Goodeid mother giving birth and the other one a one day old Redtail Splitfin baby, still with trophotaenia on its belly which work similar to our umbilical cord. Isn't it cute?

The video has been taken in a spring of the Camécuaro Lake National Park, one of the project locations of Plan G Mexico. Spotted Skiffia males dancing around their females like butterflies next to stoic Blackfin Goodea and always busy Tarascan Splitfins, looking for insect larvae between the rocks - a still life that is everything but still. You will also see exotic species like carps and swordtails. Those are the reason for our engagement as introduced species are one of the main threats to Mexican Goodeids.

Plan G Mexico consists of individual projects, currently there are nine, each covering different tasks. Some projects focus on habitat restoration so that the existing Goodeid species can retain their habitat, while in others, the habitat must first be cleared of invasive fish and plant species before the fish can thrive again. In other projects, a fish species that has already disappeared from the wild but still survived in aquariums is being reintroduced. And the best part is, it works! This success is achieved through the collaboration of many stakeholders with different skills and especially the local communities, who are our most important allies in the fight for the preservation of biodiversity.

One picture shows members of our team surveying a habitat, the other one a pair of the Tequila Splitfin. The video again shows among other fish species like the critically endangered Butterfly Splitfin (yellow tails) the orange-tailed Tequila Splitfin in its natural habitat where it has been successfully reintroduced in 2017. A success story that baffled the world!

One of our project locations is just 30 min driving away, others more than 4 hrs and the majority between 2 and 3 hrs like the scenic Camécuaro Lake National Park with its beautiful bold cypress trees or the idyllic springs and creeks at the old mill of Chapultepec (photos). Our car park has reached 300.000 and 420.000 km respectively and our vehicles spend nearly more time at the car service station than on the street, and it gets harder every day to keep our work up. We chose Crowdify because we hope that it will help us finance at least one of the vehicles on this path. The dying beneath the surface happens quietly and unnoticed by many, and aquatic species are disappearing without anyone noticing. We will not allow this; we will show the world that it doesn't have to continue as it has been and that we can change the course humanity has set. Fish like Mexico's Goodeids have no own voice, but they have ours.

The video shows another outstanding habitat: the La Angostura spring at the northern end of Zacapu Lake. Another project location that is about 2 hrs driving from Morelia and a project that we would need to end without your support ...

Freshwater Conservation Manager at Haus des Meeres-Aqua Terra Zoo and Chair of Plan G Mexico, a ten year conservation project to save Mexico's Goodeid Fishes 2023 - 2033

Since October 2023, I am chair of Plan G Mexico, a successful conservation plan for an exceptional group of fish in Mexico: Mexican Goodeids. We currently have nine projects in our portfolio and receive a lot of support from the private sector and zoos. However, this support is tied to our individual projects and basic costs, such as urgently needed vehicles, fall through the cracks.

The goal is to close this gap via this platform and finance a vehicle that will enable us to continue traveling to our project locations and continuing our projects. This is entirely in the interests of the fish we are working to protect, our students, whom we are giving a worthwhile task, and the Mexican people we are working with, to whom we are giving hope and showing that their work is important in the international spotlight.
