Project Overview

After six formative years in Zemun, Matrijaršija is relocating to a new space on the other side of Belgrade. The new home is a former bakery with lots of space for our dreams, but in need of some serious refurbishing. We ask you to participate in shaping the future of our collective’s autonomous cultural centre. In exchange for your support we offer our own production of fresh, eye-teasing prints by some of the most talented artists we know.

New home for Matrijaršija
After six formative years in a quiet street in upper Zemun, Matrijaršija is relocating to a new space in old Karaburma on the other side of Belgrade. The new home is a former bakery-gym-furniture shop with lots of space for our dreams, but in need of some serious refurbishing before we can move in. With this campaign we ask you to participate in shaping the future of our collective’s autonomous cultural centre and help us get on our feet in the new home as soon as possible. In exchange for your support we offer our own production of fresh, bright, eye-teasing prints by some of the most talented artists we know.
New home for Matrijaršija
Matrijaršija is an autonomous cultural centre founded in Zemun back in 2014, a merge of forces of two art collectives (Novo Doba and Mubareć) and several informal groups and individuals. The common denominator is fringe art in all possible and impossible combinations. The often perplexing (non)structure of Matrijaršija includes the yearly Novo Doba festival, the monthly small publishers' fair Fijuk sajam, weekly workshops with youth with intellectual disabilities, occasional exhibitions, kafanas, concerts, parties and artist-in-residencies, and constant production in our screenprinting workshop. Matrijaršija is family, work, production, recreation, history and future, growing slowly out of the womb to encompass everything. Matrijaršija is a safe place for your inner child to grow up and take his first steps. Matrijaršija is first and foremost a place, and now it is time to build a new home.

• Heating. Nobody can work in freezing, wet quarters when winter has just started. We need to install heaters, insulate the big shop windows, and seal air leaks all over the place.
• Lighting. New electric installation in all rooms, so we don't burn up, and lighting installed everywhere, so we can see well.
• Water. New water installations, so we don't flood, and a tile wash out booth so we can wipe our screens clean.
• Wood. Stairs, sleeping loft, stage, gallery, tables, benches, furbishing, shelving, all the details that will shape our new home to a great place for work, socializing and collaboration.
• Paint. And then two layers of fresh paint over it all.

We will do all of the work ourselves and with the help of our friends. We have many friends. We will reuse what we can from our old house; materials, equipment and interiors. We can do a lot with very little. We are cheap but we are not for free. Your support will be valued and remembered forever.
