Lebanon's beautiful and lively capital has a big problem: traffic. The dominant car culture causes congestion as well as serious air and noise pollution. In this context not only does the health of the population suffer, but also the economy, as the time wasted while a potentially efficient workforce sits in traffic means around $2 billion are lost each year. Deghri Messengers is a simple but radical attempt to tackle part of the problem.
Deghri Messengers
Thankfully, the popularity of the bicycle as an alternative form of transport is gradually starting to grow, thanks to ever-increasing, good value bike rental schemes and the efforts of organisations and committed activists. Examples include Beirut by Bike, Polyliban and Critical Mass Beirut. Nevertheless, the number of people commiting to the bicycle on a daily basis, for example for their commute, remains low.
Deghri Messengers
'Deghri' is Lebanese colloquial Arabic for 'right away' and 'straight on'. Our messengers will provide a fast, friendly and professional service, representing an environmentally friendly alternative to the usual, motorised methods of delivery.

At the same time we want to set a positive example that makes a real contribution to the movement towards sustainable transport in Lebanon. The presence of our messengers on the street on a day-to-day basis will encourage people to leave their cars at home and get on their bikes.

Once Deghri Messengers has established itself as an integral presence on Beirut's streets, we will start supporting other projects in the movement, both logistically and financially.

Deghri is affiliated with CyclingCircle, an organisation dedicated to promoting cycling for work, leisure and sport, and as such has a good partner with which to realise its more long-term goals.
Deghri Messengers
At the start-up phase we will primarily invest in equipment and marketing, to kit our messengers out properly and to get us noticed in the business community. If you choose to support us, your donations will go towards:
- Messenger bags
- Heavy-duty locks
- Walkie-talkies (and licences)
- Anti-pollution masks
- Uniforms
- Designing and printing flyers, posters, stickers etc.
- Insurance, so that our messengers have the confidence and security to go that extra mile.

Any surplus donations will be invested in a professional promo film.
