Project Overview

Children and adolescents in Ukraine need hope and opportunities in times of war. With your support, I would like to motivate young people in my home village of Putylovychi to read by modernizing the school library. Education is the key to a self-determined life.

🎉🌟 End of the year: Time for gratitude and new beginnings! 📆✨

✨A big thank you✨
- to the generous donors who have enriched our school library
- to the inspiring librarian who spreads knowledge and joy
- to the enthusiastic children who flourish in this creative environment

We would also like to pay great tribute to the courageous Ukrainian army defending our country with impressive strength and perseverance. Let us have faith that good will ultimately (better asap) defeat evil. Every gesture of support sends a message of hope. May we together build a world of peace and solidarity.

🎉🌟Happy New Year!

Update: May, 2023

It is nice to see that the library is a very popular place for children. 🥰📚 Books are great media because they are inspiring, offer insights into many different topics and things, and - what was important this winter because of the recurring power outages - do not need electricity. ✨️

Merry Christmas!

The children in Putylovychi like our renewed library and the large selection of interesting books a lot. They are also happy when the librarian reads them different stories 🙂📚 This week the children listened to a wonderful Christmas story in which a little mouse 🐭 helps Santa Claus 🎅 to distribute the presents 🎁 because he got lost in her garden. Have they managed to deliver the presents to the children in time?
We hope for the best! All over the world, children deserve a little miracle.
Merry Christmas! ❄️🎄

Day of Libraries in Ukraine

Today is the Day of Libraries in Ukraine. What a compelling reason to celebrate and to say the words of gratitude to everyone involved in the library world. Times are very hard now in Ukraine, but librarians continue doing their great job. As the wholescale war began, many libraries served as a shelter to displaced people, organized volunteer work, provided people with food, helped them with different problems such as finding social and financial support and provided them with free internet and necessary infrastructure.

Some of the libraries remained more traditional and simply delight their patrons with books. This should not be underestimated since people need emotional recharge and distraction from what is happening around them.

I am incredibly happy about the success of the project “Thousand Books”. I would like to express my genuine gratitude to everyone who supported this library project.

Our renewed and cozy library would not become a reality without the patience and hard work of the school librarian, without the creativity and excellent skills of the local craftsman, the brilliant ideas and help of the school teachers and the village mayor, the tireless support of my family, friends, and colleagues, and their faith in me and this project, and especially without the trust and financial support of many people who boosted the project.

When I hear that the kids are running to the library on every single break at school to spend their time there rummaging the library shelves and reading the books we have purchased, I am endlessly happy and content with the first results. But there are many other things we want and will do to foster literacy and give the children the opportunities for a better life.

Happy Ukrainian Libraries Day!

Update September 2022

Primary school children in Putylovychi listened to a short story in Ukrainian from the picture book "Mama Moo Reads" by Jujja Wieslander during the break. The book is also known in Switzerland and Germany and tells a story about a cow who borrows books from the library and reads. Very funny and exemplary. :)

It's so nice that the children will get such stories read to them more often now. We have already bought about 50 picture books about different topics (animals, friendship, courage, family, school, etc.).
Thank you all very much for your support! The project is growing and flourishing thanks to your help.

Dear friends of the library in Putylovychi

I am extremely pleased that we successfully completed the crowdfunding for the project "Thousand Books" for the library in Putylovychi. I am happy that we managed to do this together. Thank you very much for your great support!

I am currently in Putylovychi and accompany the initial renovation of the library directly on site. Since the post office and the mail order business are working perfectly, the first book orders have already arrived. So far, around 300 books from a wide range of subject areas have been delivered. These now need to be added to the library's collection and inventoried. Soon I will order more books, a good sewing machine as well as a basic stock of craft materials. Last week I also held a reading event for children. It was very well received and the children were very excited.

A note to all who ordered a goodie: Because I am currently in Ukraine taking care of the first phase of the renovation of the library, I will unfortunately not be able to send out the bags, bookmarks, etc. for a few weeks. Of course, everyone will receive their well-deserved goodie. Thank you for your understanding!

If you have any questions about the "Thousand Books" project, feel free to contact me.

Best regards from Ukraine

Purchase of the books in Ukraine

If the first stage of the "Thousand Books" project is successful, the books will be purchased directly in Ukraine. The post offices and the mail order businesses are still functioning properly despite the war. All the people who can, go to work. In many places, however, sales have dropped. By buying the books locally, the project also makes a small contribution to supporting the Ukrainian economy.
