Project Overview

After all of us had stayed at home and this global crisis is over, this project aims to bring people back together. Our goal is to create a local network within urban neighborhoods, in which a social sharing of resources, skills and abilities is encouraged. 5 Favors is a local, social platform, which will facilitate these processes of exchange and contribute to the transparency of resources.

Funding goals

  1. Stage 1:

    6.500 CHF

    47% funded

With this amount, we will be able to program a prototype and release it for test environments. With the data from testing we can define the customer needs and further develop the concept.

  2. Stage 2:

    7.500 CHF

    0% funded

After the prototype has been set up and tested, we can develop a fully working version for all the operating systems including a web-application.

  3. Stage 3:

    8.500 CHF

    0% funded

An active network is pivotal for a self-sustaining platform, because this would mean no favor will be left undone. According to Metcalfe's law, these are about 7500 active users in Zurich. We will use this amount to develop different marketing strategies to grow the network. Furthermore, all running expenses and investment costs such as server costs could be covered.

  4. Finish Stage:

    22.500 CHF

    0% funded

With your help we will have a full working version and a broad network, that will contribute to a transparency of resources and people, who are willing to help out their neighbors.

Due to the rise of social networks and increased mobility, people think they are connected, but the truth is there is a huge social isolation in major cities – people are living side by side, rather than living together. These parallel lives are causing an increase in various inhibitions, among them seeking contact with people even in the immediate vicinity. Our project aims to overcome these inhibitions and create a transparency so that the social exchange of different favors can be optimized. In order that these favors can be fulfilled, it requires some resources and capabilities of the neighbors or the people in the immediate vicinity. This is why we want to implement our project "5 Favors" and thus build a local, realistic, social network as a possible approach.
The single individual is increasingly exposed to a social isolation in urban neighborhoods. The number of social contacts in the direct area usually doesn’t go beyond the people, who are living in the same apartment or in the same house: There is a neglect of social contacts and a large inhibition to contact people in urban & living environments. We believe that there are several social needs, which exists on two levels.

Social level (general social need for contact)
● need for social integration in a social network in the immediate vicinity ● basic need for social exchange of favors o advantages: Ideal of monetarily free provision of services resulting in an emotional sense of satisfaction. (Added Value: emotional, monetary)
● need to reduce social inhibitions o advantages: building a social network with individuals with whom you normally would not make contact.

Individual level (personal social needs)
● the need for help with small favors o benefits: help within the immediate area, by social contacts who have the ability, time or necessary resources.
● the need to overcome communication barriers and create a transparency of available resources.
Our project primarily aims to bring neighbors closer. Our goal is to create social hubs and networks within urban neighborhoods, in which a social sharing of resources, skills and abilities is encouraged. 5 Favors is a local, social platform, which will facilitate these processes of exchange and contribute to the transparency of resources. With our application it is possible to reduce information barriers by simply making contact with people in the immediate vicinity. Using the application creates a social resource pool of helpful individuals, who have the need for social integration in their neighborhood.
5 Favors
The mobile application 5 Favors consists of a simple map (see figure), and it will be possible to ask for a desired favor, which can be divided into four categories: Services, Material, Food and Beverages and information. With the help of the flag option (+) the current location can be located and one can highlight his need on a map. With a push-notification within the vicinity of an asked favor, people are more likely to react. This system connects people, who are in need of a certain favor, (colored circles), with other people in the vicinity, who have the resources, skills or information to fulfill that need. Clicking on a circle will then simply open a thread to be able to start an open or a private conversation regarding the favor in question. These favors can be (to name a few examples):

● missing ingredients
○ eggs
○ baking powder
○ butter
○ milk

● materials
○ various tools
○ kitchen utensils
○ garden tools

● services
○ feeding a cat
○ water the plants
○ receiving postal deliveries
○ taking the dog for a walk

● information
○ Lost pets
○ local suggestions
○ insider tips
○ lost & found
5 Favors
These social interactions generate a new non-monetary value. Initially, the user receives 5 “Favorpoints” with which he can ask for favors. Once he has used up his points and all favors have been accepted and executed (and therefore he has 0 points left), he will need to do a favor to be able to ask for a favor again. For big favors it is also possible to assign several points. With this point system, people are more likely to be prompted to return favors, which again allows them to ask for favors again. The purpose of these points is mainly to encourage reciprocal beneficence.
The majority of the 20000 CHF will be used to program the App, which includes a version for the two most popular operating system and a web-version. Plus 4 main functions & 10 secondary functions.

Other identified costs:

Google Play Goals costs (25.-)
Apple Appstore 99.- per year
Running investments: Online advertising, promoting word to mouth etc.

Server costs:

Server: 300.- CHF / year (Pivotal Deployment + 180.- CHF / year) Domain: 35.- CHF / year
Traffic: 4.- CHF / 1000 User

The server costs depends on the number of users and the traffic, so the costs of this element will rise asymptotically over time (with the growth of the network).
